In England a marrow is a long, thick squash very similar to a zucchini. First recorded by Billy Cotton and His Band, this 1952 British novelty song was written by Stanley Smith Master using his pen name Edrich Siebert. It tells of a rather large marrow. For those with that kind of mind, innuendo is implied. I, of course, don't have that sort of mind. Of course.

In 1952 Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote "Hound Dog" for Big Mama Thornton, about a cheating man. Four years later Elvis Presley started singing a version to an actual hound dog that had been passed off as a "high class" breed. It was Thornton's only hit, and a major hit for Elvis.

Jerry Jeff Walker wrote "Mr. Bojangles" for his 1968 album. While in jail for intoxication in New Orleans he met a homeless street performer who called himself Bojangles (no relation to the famous singer and tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson). The next year the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded their version, and Sammy Davis Jr. made the song a regular in his shows.

This is the SlowjamaDans' rendition of Shirley Ellis and Lincoln Chase's "The Name Game". Ellis released her recording of the song in 1964. But she never played the game with the United Territories of The Sovereign Nation of The People's Republic of Slowjamastan... perhaps because it was founded 57 years after she recorded it. Is that really an excuse?! So of course the SlowjamaDans had to right that wrong. And they brought along the SlowjamaDancers to kick up some sand.

Rupert Holmes' 1979 "Escape" became known as the "The Piña Colada Song". Holmes has said he actually doesn't like Piña Coladas. But I do. And imagine my disappointment when, at most of the establishments I've ordered one, they tell me they don't have a blender, or some other excuse. What's up with that? What bar doesn't have a blender?!

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's 1959 song about the sameness of cowboy shows in that time. But funny, and, no doubt, this became Dudley Doright's favorite song. It was a hit for The Coasters.

Shel Silverstein wrote many of Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show's hits, including this 1972 song about a successful rock band that doesn't feel successful because they can't get on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. I know how they feel -- I can't either!

Irish harper Rory Dall O'Cahan's 1603 "Give Me Your Hand", written in Scotland for Lady Eglington after she apologized for mistaking him for a common harper. King James VI heard it and invited him to the Scottish court, where he became quite popular. It has become a staple of Celtic music.

"Three Cool Cats" is a 1958 R&B novelty song referencing the "Beat Generation". It was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The Coasters released its first recording, and in 1962 by the pre-Ringo Beatles on their Decca Records audition.

What do you get when you mix everyone's favorite Tuesday treat (tacos) with everyone's favorite wedding melody (Pachelbel's Canon in D)? Parry Gripp's 2012 "Raining Tacos", of course. So, appropriately, I am rendering it on harp. Tacos will be served at the reception.

Jim Henson's and Sam Pottle's 1976 theme song for The Muppet Show". You can't help but love the Muppets, and the theme song humorously sums them up joyfully. You just have to be careful not so sing it when you have a frog in your throat. That would be disrespectful.

From the German Band NENA, a 1983 song that tells a story of 99 (red) balloons that are mistaken for a UFO (inspired by a real life prank involving 100 balloons minus one that didn't make it, and used to protest the Cold War). Thanks to Walsh Wilmot for suggesting this video and the harp take on the balloons.

A trip to the Grand Old Harpry for a 46 string tribute to the late, great Dolly Parton. While working at the Leo Burnett advertising agency  in the 1960s, Bob Noel wrote the music and lyrics to what would become (Ho Ho Ho) a classic commercial tune. Of course he may have stolen that laugh from Santa Claus... or maybe Santa got it from the giant? This video is not sponsored by "Green Giant" -- it is simply a cover song rendition of the song from the '60s.

Harry Belafonte made Irving Burgie, William Attaway's 1955 upbeat, happy song famous in 1956. It's about a kind of hyper-active donkey.

My version, with harp, is a sing-along. Whenever you see the captions, sing this line: "Jackass will jump and bray, let him bray, let him bray". That's all you have to know. Have a joyous time with it!

This song lauds (the fictional) Charlie Mops, credited as the inventor of beer. It was popular in the 19th century British Music Halls, but is thought to pre-date that. It's a good, rousing pub song as well.  Many thanks to Chris Simmons for suggesting this song.
