In 1952 Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote "Hound Dog" for Big Mama Thornton, about a cheating man. Four years later Elvis Presley started singing a version to an actual hound dog that had been passed off as a "high class" breed. It was Thornton's only hit, and a major hit for Elvis.

Rupert Holmes' 1979 "Escape" became known as the "The Piña Colada Song". Holmes has said he actually doesn't like Piña Coladas. But I do. And imagine my disappointment when, at most of the establishments I've ordered one, they tell me they don't have a blender, or some other excuse. What's up with that? What bar doesn't have a blender?!

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's 1959 song about the sameness of cowboy shows in that time. But funny, and, no doubt, this became Dudley Doright's favorite song. It was a hit for The Coasters.

Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly’s 1983 song, which they recorded that year on their album. Heart did it in 1987, and I’m doing it in 2026. Heart? Did they mean to name their band “Harp”?

In 1961 Barry Mann and Gerry Goffin asked the question we all wanted the answer to - who actually did put the bomp in the bomb bah bomp bah bomp? And it is still relevant today. All the more-so when you add harp!

Brian Wilson adapted Chuck Berry’s song in 1963, and “Surfin’ U.S.A.” was a hit for the Beach Boys. I originally had electric guitar in the mix, but it actually muddied up the sound track and I didn’t need it. So with only harp (balanced on a surf board) and bass, here’s my cover.

Rick Dees wrote “Disco Duck” in 1976, and recorded it with his band “Rick Dees and His Cast of Idiots”. It made #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for one week. My concern was could I play harp wearing a duck head? I was pretty sure I could play bass without having to see it, but harp? Surprise!

Sheb Wooley’s 1958 novelty rock song that was a #1 hit on the Billboard Music charts for six weeks. The song is NOT about a purple people-eater as many people mistakenly believe. It is about a purple-people eater, which is why he’s not purple in my video. It also references a popular rock song, "Short Shorts" is a 1957 rock and roll song by The Royal Teens that became a hit shortly before “Purple People Eater” was written. So, if you’re a purple person heed this warning!
