Passover begins the day after April Fools Day this year, so here is a Passover parody song to the tune of Taylor Swift’s 2025 song, “The Life of a Showgirl”.

For folks who aren’t familiar with the Seder, the traditional meal and Passover celebration, a glass of wine is always set on the dinner table for the prophet Elijah, and at a certain point in the ceremony, the door is opened to let him in. Additionally the participants recline, children ask the traditional four questions, and the story of Moses and the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt is recounted. I got to wondering, how does Elijah manage to make it to every Seder in the world, all in one day?

Notes: “Sivivon” is a Hebrew word meaning dreidel, the four sided top traditionally played with during Chanukah (aka Hanukkah), the Festival of Lights. Ma'oz Tzur ( מָעוֹז צוּר ), or “Rock of Ages” first appeared in the 13th or 14th century. The song, which has nothing to do with the 18th century Christian hymn of the same name, celebrates the miracle of Hanukkah.

Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes required Jews to worship Greek gods, resulting in revolt, led by the cohen ha-gadol (Israel’s high priest) Judah Maccabee, which successfully pushed back the larger Greek army. Once the Maccabees succeeded they rededicated the temple, which included the lighting of the menorah (synagogues have an “eternal light” symbolizing God’s eternal presence that is never supposed to go out). But only one jar of oil survived the desecration... only enough for one night. The Hanukkah miracle was that the oil lasted for eight days until a new supply could be obtained.
