King Tut’s tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in late 1922, creating a sensation. In terms of popularity, Tutankhamun arguably became the Taylor Swift of the day, spawning enthusiasm for the discovery across the globe. Harry Von Tilzer and William Jerome got in on the excitement in 1923 when they wrote this song, which became a huge hit.

It’s more enthusiasm than actual fact. “He ruled for many years” isn’t accurate unless you think less than a decade (1332–1323 BCE) is “many years”. After all, he became king when he was 9 years old, and the boy Pharoah died when he was 18. And it is unlikely that Cleopatra sat on his knee, as she wasn’t born until about 1254 years after he died.

But this song was never meant to be a history lesson. It’s just a fun song.

Written by Peter De Rose, Jo Trent, “Yes She Do, No She Don’t” (aka “I’m Satisfied With My Gal”) in 1927. It was first recorded in March of that year by the California Ramblers. The song saw a resurgence in 1963 when Jim Kweskin and The Jug Band recorded it, which is when I first heard it. It’s just a fun call-out and response song. Yeah, I wasn’t around when it was written in 1927, though my mother was born later that year!

It was recorded by several artists including Duke Ellington and a Mel Blanc version featuring some of his famous voices, including cameos by Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird and Sylvester, among others. A 1918 classic by Leo Wood, the lyrics are sad, but the melody is unbridled happiness. It is fine on the harp, but the banjolele really makes it pop. I first heard it done by Jim Kweskin’s Jug Band, but it’s been performed by just about everyone including Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, Merle Travis, Leon Redbone, and Fats Waller.

Frank Silver and Irving Cohn’s 1923 hit was a bit of nonsense, and a brilliant one at that! It was the number one song for five weeks, and has been performed by everyone from Benny Goodman to Spike Jones to The Muppets. The lyrics were based on an actual Greek fruit stand owner on Long Island.

Before Bill Murray, there was Billy Murray, (the “Denver Nightengale”), a comedian/songwriter/recording artist - recording on wax cylinders - popular through the 1920s. “Ever Since you Told Me that You Love Me” is one of his lesser known songs. In 1968 Tiny Tim released a version of the song on his album, “God Bless Tiny Tim”, with reworked words. I’m not THAT much of a nut, so I went back to the Murray lyrics for this video.
