A frequent questions for harp players is “What made you learn the harp?”  I’ll answer that question with this song, which, by the way, is a true story.  I got my private pilot’s license a year or two before taking up the harp, and it just stood to reason that I’d have guaranteed employment in the next world.

The SlowjamaDans are back, this time with a tribute to Slowjamastan’s (dry but mighty) Lazy River, a slow jam. Slowjamastan is a micro-nation in the California desert. It’s national animal is the ring tailed raccoon. It boasts the Lazy River that is so very lazy that it rarely bothers to have any water.  Hoagy Carmichael and Sidney Arodin wrote “Lazy River”in 1930, almost a century before the Lazy River was a twinkle in the exalted Sultan of Slowjamastan’s eye. The song was way ahead of its time! So here’s a little desert harp rendition.

There are actually a lot of musical instruments on the International Space Station (ISS) , but, to date, no harp. And, yeah there is or was a gorilla suit up there that belonged to Astronaut Scott Kelly. A day or two after I wrote this song I did notice a harp on the USS Discovery (Star Trek: Discovery) in a lovely scene in which two of the characters play cello and piano together —neither played the harp, but it was there in space. However, this series takes place 1100+  years into the future, so we have a long way to go! In our era “I am Henry the Eighth I am” is Harry Champion’s most famous song, though the old 1910 music hall song is popularly attributed to Herman and His Hermits, who, for the second time in the song’s history, turned it into a hit in 1965. Champion (his real name was William Henry Crump, but, then “Herman” wasn’t Peter Noone’s real name either) was a prolific music hall song writer, and my favorite of his songs is “Oh! That Gorgonzola Cheese”, guaranteed to stir up an audience in the middle of a harp set. I do it as audience participation, so please sing along with the chorus. I had a similar experience years ago when I was traveling in England with my friend Phillip, a gentle soul and an avid Anglophile. We were sharing a room in an inn, and I walked in to an incredibly off-putting stench. I asked Phillip what could possibly smell so foul. “Oh, he said mildly,” It’s a stilton cheese.” “Why is it on the shelf instead of a refrigerator?” I demanded. “Why,” Phillip replied, “Stilton is best at room temperature."
