I’ll Fly Away was written in 1929 by Christian songwriter Alfred E. Brumley. Since that time it has become one of the most popular songs in the genre. Brumley said he was thinking about flying away from the cotton field he was working in when he came up with the song, but it took on a spiritual interpretation that is associated with it to this day.
