I was driving home through northern Virginia and took a wrong left turn. After a while I noticed I was in West Virginia, but it took more time to find a gas station to ask for directions. This was before car GPS was popular, so I was only armed with a road atlas. When I got there a group of local folks were quite amused that I had made it so very far into their state. They pointed me in the right direction, and country roads took me home.
Three Massachusetts men, Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert and John Denver, wrote this song, and Danoff said he used West Virginia instead of Massachusetts because it sounded better in the song. Denver took it to number 2 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. I am also from Massachusetts, so it seems an appropriate choice (and I kind of like it on the harp).
