Lady Carolina Nairne wrote this poem in 1796 for Mrs Campbell Colquhoun of Killermont, whose infant daughter had died, and who was on her death bed herself. “Leal” means “loyal” or “faithful”, and “Land of the Leal” means “Heaven”.
