Jerry Jeff Walker wrote "Mr. Bojangles" for his 1968 album. While in jail for intoxication in New Orleans he met a homeless street performer who called himself Bojangles (no relation to the famous singer and tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson). The next year the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded their version, and Sammy Davis Jr. made the song a regular in his shows.
